Insomnia Therapy (CBT-I)
Insomnia is one of the most common sleep problems. It can mean trouble falling asleep, waking up through the night, or lying awake when you’d rather be sleeping. Over time it can also cause daytime tiredness, low mood and trouble concentrating.
Cognitive Behavioural Therapy for Insomnia (CBT-I) is the recommended first-line treatment for chronic insomnia. Sleep medications only treat the symptoms. CBT-I works on the thoughts and habits that keep you from sleeping well, so the improvements tend to last.
How does CBT-I work?
CBT-I is a structured, medication-free program led by a registered therapist. Over several weeks, you learn practical ways to reset your sleep patterns, calm the racing thoughts that keep you awake at bedtime, and build habits that support steady, restful sleep. Your plan is tailored to your own sleep challenges.
Who is CBT-I for?
You don’t need a referral or a diagnosis to get started. CBT-I may help if you:
- Have trouble falling asleep or staying asleep
- Wake up too early and can’t get back to sleep
- Rely on sleep medication and want a longer-term solution
- Feel tired, irritable or unfocused during the day because of poor sleep
Treatment options
Digital therapy program: A six-week, self-paced program you do through our app. You can message your registered therapist directly for guidance and support along the way.
One-on-one therapy: Live virtual sessions with a registered therapist. Most people do five weekly sessions, and the number can be adjusted to suit your needs.
Both options are virtual, so you can take part from home anywhere on Vancouver Island.
What to expect
Programs run about six weeks, and many people start noticing improvements within three to four weeks. Common benefits include falling asleep faster, getting back to sleep more easily after waking, less anxiety at bedtime and better energy during the day.
Insomnia therapy may be covered by extended health plans that include psychotherapy or registered social worker services, and it may be eligible under a health spending account. Check with your provider for details.
